Short of money and support, McGrody ends bid for District 23 seat
Retired businessman James McGrody has dropped his candidacy for the Republican nomination in Congressional District 23, saying his largely online campaign died from lack of money and supporters. McGrody's departure — his second in six months — leaves San Antonio attorney and real estate investor Francisco "Quico" Canseco as the only announced candidate for next March's Republican primary. It also highlights questions about Bexar County Commissioner Lyle Larson's intentions. McGrody, of Fair Oaks Ranch, relied heavily on collecting voters' e-mail addresses and feeding them electronic newsletters on his positions. "I wasn't getting there — I wasn't getting the readership I needed to get," said McGrody, 68. "Overall, Bexar County was speaking." Canseco, who moved into District 23 from his native Laredo in 2006, received some of his potential support.

Startup plans floating data centres
A STARTUP is planning to build floating data centres on knackered cargo ships. San Francisco Bay Area company International Data Security (IDS) envisions it will have up to 50 decommissioned container ships housing data server farms, moored in various ports around the world including 22 in North American cities. IDS believes using cargo ships will give it flexibility and enable expansion limited only by the availability of ships and port space instead of real estate constraints. Its first location will be available at Pier 50 in San Francisco starting in April and it already has, ahem, anchor tenants signed, a source close to the company said. Shipboard cargo spaces will be built out as data center floors and deck space will be used to stack modular data centers in standard shipping containers.

Clinton Wins Primary But No Delegates
THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below. DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Hillary Rodham Clinton's poll closing rally in Florida had all the trappings of a primary win. The only thing missing were the delegates. The New York senator, fresh off her lopsided loss to rival Barack Obama in South Carolina, sought some momentum Tuesday in a Florida contest that drew no candidates and no campaigning. Last year, the national party stripped Florida of its delegates as punishment for moving its primary ahead of Feb. 5 and the candidates pledged to bypass the state. At stake Tuesday were 185 delegates. Still, Clinton winked at that pledge, holding two closed fundraisers in recent days and scheduling a rally with supporters after the polls closed in Florida.
Sprint Tries to Connect With Other Firms
Since taking over in December, he has authorized the dismissal of about 4,000 employees and the shuttering of 125 Sprint-branded retail shops. He has also let go three members of senior management, including Chief Financial Officer Paul Saleh, who served as interim chief executive before Hesse took over. Sprint insiders said yesterday that nothing has been finalized about the plans to form a new venture, though one official said a decision could come within a few weeks. The new venture may involve Sprint spinning off its WiMax division and merging it with Clearwire, or spinning off its WiMax division into a new venture in which Clearwire, Intel and others invest. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because they had not been authorized to speak about the private talks.

Then there is the need to confine the disease within the 10-km radius of the area where the birds have been found to be affected. Poultry farmers have to be given adequate compensation. After all, more than 3.75 lakh birds may have to be culled. All these tasks can be accomplished only if the Centre and the state work in tandem. What is more worrying is the fact that this is the third outbreak of bird flu in the country in two years. If it was Maharashtra in February 2006, it was Manipur in July 2007. There is need to go deeply into the reasons for these frequent outbreaks. One possible cause is the insensitivity of the local administration to such developments. For instance, the West Bengal government did issue an alert, which even reached the District Magistrate in time. But personnel of the animal husbandry department just did not act on it.
