Bedford Co. considers raising fees for dog licenses

If you own a dog in Bedford County it may cost you more to purchase a license for your furry friend.

The Bedford County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing Tuesday to consider raising dog licensing fees. The meeting begins at 7:30 p.m. in the County Administration Building .

The proposed cost to license a spayed or neutered dog will rise from $3 to $5. For non spayed or non-neutered dogs, the license fee is proposed to increase from $5 to $10.

New state legislation, which took effect July 1, requires veterinarians to forward rabies vaccination certificates to the treasurer's office.

“This state requirement has increased the workload of the treasurer's office to the point that the cost to process the tag and to complete the required paperwork has exceeded the income derived from the dog tags," County Attorney Carl Boggess said .

Travels with Herb

Straight south today, from Tucumcari, New Mexico to Deming N.M. Very high country. For about the last 75 miles into Albuquerque, I was above 5000 feet elevation, and loosing power on the hills. Over nighted here, then west to Phoenix. I originally intended to meet friends and relatives here and stay a few days. After stopping for the night, I felt the pull of my children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren in California.

I bailed out the next morning for Manteca, in the central valley of California.

I made Barstow for the night, back on route 66 via I-40. The rig, at 117,000 miles, was purring like a kitten. Gas prices in California are obscene. I drove on into Manteca the following day and spent Thanksgiving with the whole gaggle.

I'm Herb and I'm on a road trip.

In Nevada, Obama's message of 'new politics' failed to deliver

Obama has no chance t owin from a sociological perspective. In addition to be representative of the black middle class and bourgeoisie, he cannot get ride of the Race, Gender and Class which divides our society. This is a lie and I think Obama is sociologically a liar and naive. His speeches are excellent into a church but not in politics.

People, not guns, are the problem

Body counts garner attention from the media like a flashy neon sign. They create buzz, such as Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels' gun control stance that quotes the figure of 550 violent firearms crimes in 2005 ("Seattle weighs in on handgun ban," Wednesday).

Most people will be horrified and will fail to ask the crucial, underlying question: How many of those guns were purchased legally? After all, laws will affect guns legally acquired, not those from secondary sources. The answer: 15 percent of guns used in crimes are legally obtained. That leaves 85 percent unaffected by changes to gun control laws.

Consider how many violent crimes are thwarted around the country by guns. That's a statistic one rarely hears. The number officially reported to the police is roughly 64,615 yearly; the estimate can jump as high as 2.45 million if one factors in unreported cases.
