Powell Goldstein Leaps Into N.C. Market

Powell Goldstein has jumped into the heated Charlotte, N.C., legal market, opening a six-lawyer office focusing on structured finance work with attorneys raided from two established firms in the city.

The new office piggybacks on the commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS) servicing work that PoGo gained with the Dallas office it opened in 2006 and further expands the firm's territory beyond its traditional Atlanta and Washington bases.

Geoffrey R. Maibohm joins Powell Goldstein as a partner from Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft, bringing with him associates Ralph Baldino, D. Scott Rudd and Daniel P. Zellers. The group focuses on loan servicing for pools of commercial mortgage-backed securities. A fifth attorney, associate John W. Oakes II, who also focuses on structured finance, joined the firm last year from Alston & Bird's Charlotte office.

How not to conduct an interview

The way you perceive yourself and your business may not necessarily appear that way in print or broadcast if you don't approach the interview as something that requires adequate preparation and the right attitude.

While I can't show you actual clips, I can offer examples of high-profile figures who have developed a media personality, and highlight how their approach to media is closely tied to their public image.

Go on the offensive: Even before the onset of his U.S. legal troubles and all the negative press it generated it was clear Conrad Black had little love for the media. Although he was — and continues to be — a genuinely interesting figure, even in his most successful years he left an impression of someone who is angry and impatient. It's likely this suited him just fine, but this image would be difficult for Black to recast without first changing his approach to the media.

FULL CLASSIC REACTION

That's better than the last two (Classics). He got a little pinned up in there. Kent (Desormeaux) said he ran hard and gave him everything. We'll probably keep him going for the Clark Handicap (Churchill Downs on Nov. 26).

Kent Desormeaux, jockey, fourth, Perfect Drift He fought hard for me. I was happy with his effort. He put me everywhere I wanted to be; when I asked him to go faster, he did. Unfortunately, there are some in there that ran faster.

D. Wayne Lukas, trainer, fifth, Azeri: We didn't get away as clean as we would have liked to. There was a little bit of action in the first 30 yards. We wanted the three or four lane. Instead we got down on the inside, and we didn't have a choice. It was the way the race unfolded, not anything Pat (Day) did.

No decisive break in view for GOP logjam

No decisive break in view for GOP logjam Three contests fail to clear crowded slate; pundits look past Super Tuesday for front-runner. Mark Hornbeck / Detroit News Lansing Bureau

Following Mitt Romney's win in Michigan this week, the Republicans have had three key presidential contests, three different winners and no clear favorite.

How long will it take for a solid front-runner to emerge?

"No one knows, and whoever pretends to is either a fool or a charlatan," said Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia.

Not that the margin matters, but, symbolically, it would be helpful if everyone understands that people voted against the casino.... One major note in this meeting was the "Orange Shirts". Money came from somewhere to emblazon stickers, hats, and t-shirts with the slogan "vote YES for Middleboro's future" adorning several dozen attendees. An IBEW bus dispatched about a dozen such people right as my bus was letting off, all with matching chairs and carrying spring water. We entered the registration area together in front of my bus. They did not register or receive a ballot, but sat with Middleoboro residents and participated in voice and hand votes.... (Photos courtesy of BlueMassGroup.
