Part of the inspiration to sell its canal real estate came from a deal the port struck with Trinity Yachts, a company that constructs multimillion-dollar luxury vessels at a yard on the France Road side of the Industrial Canal. Katrina swallowed Trinity's facilities, forcing the company to relocate its headquarters to Gulfport, Miss. The Port of New Orleans wanted desperately to lure back the company, but Trinity refused to bite unless it could own its property. The port agreed to sell about 48 acres to the yacht builder for $4.5 million. "In the case of Trinity, it was a do-or-die deal," Hughes said. "We got to keep all those jobs in the city." The port has arranged a similar agreement with Better Boxing Co., which in July purchased a port-owned warehouse on the Industrial Canal and is poised to buy the 4 acres of land beneath it.
22 years and still jazzed about Disneyland gig: Strutting their stuff ...
For 22 years, a group of Arizona State University graduates have held squatters' rights to one of the choicest pieces of real estate on Planet Earth. The spot: At the bend of the river in Disneyland's New Orleans Square, just across from the Fantasmic! extravaganza on Tom Sawyer's Island. The grads: The Side Street Strutters, one of American's great Dixieland jazz bands, have been entertaining visitors to the park since 1985. .
Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)
Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation: Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos. Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them. We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons. So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!" We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.

Reuters injected bias into this December 24 article about 40 missing Cuban “migrants" who never arrived in America after being smuggled out of Cuba. The article minimized Castro's oppression and faulted the US for the Cubans' flight. The wire service began by deliberately mischaracterizing the Cubans as “migrants" instead of calling them “refugees" or even “passengers." Labeling them “migrants" ignores Cuba's political and economic straitjacket, and more importantly links Cuban refugees to the issue of illegal immigration. The media are beginning to call everyone who comes to America with the intent to stay, “migrants," whether here legally or not, which erases any distinctions. People who are anti-illegal immigration often support Cuban refugees remaining in the US, and linking the two issues can reduce opposition to illegal immigration.
Phishing As A Service, Part II
Now you no longer need an in with the international Storm syndicate to outsource your phishing attacks. On InformationWeek, George Hulme reports on a DIY phishing service: "The service automatically generates text for the phishing emails that target various Web mail and social networks, including Facebook, Hi5, Orkut, and others... While this is more of a novelty, and reminiscent of the old-time virus construction kits from the early 1990s, it reveals how heavily social networks will be targeted going forward." Hulme predicts a significant attack through the social networks. I still think it's coming from instant messaging. Posted by Joe Caponi at 12:15 PM, January 29, 2008 Return To Hot Topics .

Guardsmen on smuggling charges
Sounds like the start of a stand up comedy routine. But it's no joke. Because this is our country we're talking about; and the three front runners for the Democratic party nomination really are an African American, a woman and a white "son of the south."As a black woman, I find it quite amazing that, in a year when many thought the big news would be Hillary's very real chance to become the first female president, Barack has entered the scene to give her a run for her money and for a place in history.Of course, both candidates do not want you to vote on the basis of race or gender. But there's that third fella -- the one who stands to benefit from all the recent bickering between the front runners: John Edwards. While the other two square off over "fairy tales" and the relative legacies of Dr.
Home foreclosure rate soars in 2007
LOS ANGELES — The number of U.S. homes that slipped into some stage of foreclosure in 2007 was 79 percent higher than in the previous year, a real estate tracking company said Tuesday. Many homeowners started to fall behind on mortgage payments in the last three months, setting the stage for more foreclosures this year. About 1.3 million homes received foreclosure-related warnings last year, up from 717,522 in 2006, Irvine-based RealtyTrac Inc. said. Foreclosure filings rose 75 percent from the previous year to 2.2 million. More than 1 percent of all U.S. households were in some phase of the foreclosure process last year, up from about half a percent in 2006, RealtyTrac said. Nevada, Florida, Michigan and California posted the highest foreclosure rates, the company said.
