| Bottled Water Boycotts: Back-to-the-Tap Movement Gains Momentum
From San Francisco to New York to Paris, city governments, high-class restaurants, schools, and religious groups are ditching bottled water in favor of what comes out of the faucet. With people no longer content to pay 1,000 times as much for bottled water, a product no better than water from the tap, a backlash against bottled water is growing. The U.S. Conference of Mayors, which represents some 1,100 American cities, discussed at its June 2007 meeting the irony of purchasing bottled water for city employees and for city functions while at the same time touting the quality of municipal water. The group passed a resolution sponsored by Mayors Gavin Newsom of San Francisco, Rocky Anderson of Salt Lake City, and R. T. Rybak of Minneapolis that called for the examination of bottled water's environmental impact.
Hockey laid out in black and white
The usual onslaught of hockey books has made its way across the transom this holiday season, but two titles stand out for the fan of the game. One deals with the arcane world of hockey scouting while the other examines another complicated universe -- Russian hockey -- as witnessed by a Canadian coach. Speaking of Columbus, author Gare Joyce had the hockey junkie's dream of being embedded with the scouting staff of the Blue Jackets for a year, beginning with the 2006 draft and extending till the 2007 selection process. The result is Future Greats and Heartbreaks (Doubleday, $39.95), a rich lode for students of the hockey business. .
Jury seated in Myers’ first-degree murder trial
A jury was seated and trial got under way in Bradley County Criminal Court Tuesday for Scotty Lee Myers. Myers Myers is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Pamela Jo Lane in May 2007. Five male and seven female jurors were selected to hear the case. Assistant district attorney general Stephen Hatchett is serving as lead prosecutor, with 10th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Bebb in second chair.. Hatchett's opening statements included premeditation factors encompassing an alleged embezzlement in early 2007 in which the couple was accused. The prosecution alleges the motive in the homicide was over Lane's subpoena to testify against Myers. Public defenders Richard Hughes and Larry Wright are serving as counsel for Myers.
Climate Optimism: Global Warming Will Wipe Out Conservative States
While the northeast will also see some coastal flooding, its geography is such that that aside from a few projecting sandbars like Long Island and Cape Cod, the land rises fairly quickly to well above sea level. Sure, Boston, New York and Philadelphia will be threatened, but these are geographically confined areas that could lend themselves to protection by Dutch-style dikes. The West Coast too tends to rise rapidly to well above sea level in most places. Only down in Southern California towards the San Diego area is the ground closer to sea level. So what we see is that huge swaths of conservative America are set to face a biblical deluge in a few more presidential cycles. Incredibly, this makes Lindorff happy, an emotion he appears interested in others sharing: Then there's the matter of the Midwest, which climate experts say is likely to face a permanent condition of unprecedented drought, making the place largely unlivable, and certainly unfarmable.
Dems, economy upstage Bush's speech
In a riveting speech just hours before Bush's, Sen. Ted Kennedy attacked the underpinnings of Clinton's candidacy and passed the baton of his late brother's iconic presidency to Obama. A third candidate to succeed, GOP Sen. John McCain, did not even show up, remaining in Florida to campaign in a key primary Tuesday. Facing a hostile Congress, abysmal public approval ratings (his latest Gallup Poll rating is 32 percent) and even presidential candidates of his own party running away from him, Bush's only strategy is to play "small ball and defense" for the remainder of his term, said Texas A&M presidential scholar George Edwards. "The odds are against him doing almost anything except motherhood resolutions." Bush got little credit when the economy grew robustly during most of his term.

Local company plans to heat up the real estate market
Doner also said the auction company is very active in working with conventional real estate agents. He said "every property in the auction will offer the professional realtor the same commission structure as the conventional listings.
