| Whiteside could be big downtown draw
It was like flying first class.I realize these memories are not part of many of you now living in Corvallis, but I know there can be a real appreciation for its history if only it is correctly preserved.I want to see this theater be a movie theater again and not another strip mall. I want to see ownership by people who realize the theater's historic value to this community.Visit the Benton County Historical Society Museum in Philomath to see the beautiful exhibit telling of the Whiteside's history. Then you will understand the need to save this theater for generations to come.Kathy Herdt-BerbevinSalemWomen's basketball deserves supportI know the difference between men's and women's sports. I really do.Mine is the first generation to dip our big toe into Title Nine. Discrepancies between the sexes in competitive sports are many.
Britney's antics drive a personal economy
For a growing number of people and businesses, Britney's saga is about money: Every time she sinks to new lows, cash flows. And these days, no one is above the fray. When a custody dispute devolved into a three-hour standoff at Spears' home Jan. 3, police officers and firefighters were pressed into duty. Television stations sent up helicopters, and cable news anchors reported the unfolding drama in real time. The Associated Press had two reporters working the story, with editors on both coasts updating it seven times throughout the night. .

Inside the unit where babies cling on to life
Last month The Observer gained unprecedented access to one of the most influential and pioneering neonatal intensive care wards in Britain. Our investigation coincides with the first parliamentary battle over abortion laws for almost 20 years and the first nationwide survey of maternity services by the government's own health standards watchdog, in which mothers and babies were found to be treated poorly in overstretched NHS maternity wards. It is an issue this newspaper was among the first to bring to public attention almost three years ago through our Better Birth Campaign. Sited in the middle of Hackney in east London, one of the most deprived and multicultural areas in the country, and a referral centre for neighbouring hospitals, the neonatal unit at Homerton University Hospital is one of the busiest and most highly regarded in Britain.
Travels with Herb
Straight south today, from Tucumcari, New Mexico to Deming N.M. Very high country. For about the last 75 miles into Albuquerque, I was above 5000 feet elevation, and loosing power on the hills. Over nighted here, then west to Phoenix. I originally intended to meet friends and relatives here and stay a few days. After stopping for the night, I felt the pull of my children, grandchildren and even great-grandchildren in California. I bailed out the next morning for Manteca, in the central valley of California. I made Barstow for the night, back on route 66 via I-40. The rig, at 117,000 miles, was purring like a kitten. Gas prices in California are obscene. I drove on into Manteca the following day and spent Thanksgiving with the whole gaggle. I'm Herb and I'm on a road trip.
Heavy early voting spurs high turnout expectation for primary
Party and elections officials said Florida's moving its primary from March to January this year has engaged voters who feel like the race is still undecided, and a heavily publicized property tax cutting amendment is likely fueling interest. More than 1 million of the state's 10.2 million registered voters had already cast an early ballot through Sunday, state officials said. That includes just more than 500,000 Republicans and about 435,000 Democrats. For Democrats, that's a more than fourfold increase from the March 2004 presidential primary, when 97,000 Democrats voted early. There was no Republican presidential primary in 2004, because President Bush ran for re-election. The turnout figures for the 2004 and 2000 primaries were about 20 percent. The heavy participation by Democrats surprised even party officials, because the Democratic National Committee punished Florida for moving its primary earlier by stripping all its delegates in the nominating process.
