Franchise Expo South Links Business Owners, Operators
If you're living in South Florida and you're tired of working in corporate America, you have career options in the franchised world. Probably too many, if you have the money. South Florida is a growth market for franchise businesses, according to Steve Greenbaum, chairman of the International Franchise Association, which is hosting its second annual Franchise Expo South in Miami through Sunday. "This market is underserved," said Greenbaum. "And this market is the gateway to Central and South America and the Caribbean." About 250 franchisers ranging from pizza parlors to gourmet pet bakeries and janitor services to senior care services were featured at the expo. More than 10,000 attendees were expected at the three-day event, which began Friday. Among the early visitors Friday was Fort Lauderdale resident Mark Dijkhuizen, a real estate investor looking for food concepts to plug into properties he owns in South Florida, New York and Connecticut.
Brooke Berman: Apartment Hunting as Art
In a city in which real estate is an obsession, Brooke Berman's experience is so unique, she felt compelled to turn it into a play. After all, how many New Yorkers can say that they've lived in more than 30 apartments around the city? Berman's new play, Hunting and Gathering, now having its world premiere at Primary Stages at 59E59 Theaters with an enviable cast (Mamie Gummer, Keira Naughton, Jeremy Shamos and Michael Chernus) directed by Leigh Silverman, follows four young New Yorkers in search of "their place." It's a topic that Berman, a Juilliard graduate who began her career as a solo performer, has obviously thought about a lot—and her lyrical Broadway.com essay gives an intriguing (and personal) preview of how the idea of "coming home" can be presented on an off-Broadway stage.
