| Teacher of the week: Kay Shelton
Kay Shelton teaches P.E. at DeSoto Central Elementary for grades K-5. She is also the soccer coordinator for the intramural soccer program for grades K-6. She lives in Southaven with her husband, Billy, and their two sons, Josh and Jesse. When did you know you wanted to become a teacher? When I was younger, I worked a lot with children either in church or day care, and I loved it. One day, our preacher's wife told me that she thought I would make a good teacher. I guess she started the thought process. What do you still hope to accomplish as an educator that you haven't done yet? As a P.E. teacher, I would love to get all children involved in some sort of extracurricular activity. They all need to have some sort of activity that gets them up and moving instead of watching TV or playing video games.
Recap: LA Lakers vs. New York

Kobe Bryant added 24 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds for the Lakers, who snapped a three-game losing streak. Lamar Odom chipped in with 22 points and 12 boards. "Our coverage on defense was much better," said Bryant. "This was a good boost for us." Jamal Crawford and Nate Robinson both had 22 points for the Knicks, who have dropped three of four games. David Lee finished with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Zach Randolph had 16 points and 14 boards. "The last five or six minutes we didn't have good defensive execution," Kicks coach Isiah Thomas said. "We lost our composure. No positives from this game." The game was tightly contested throughout.
Doug Moe: 'Mayor of Black Milwaukee' graces mag cover
THE JUST-PUBLISHED Winter 2007-2008 issue of the Wisconsin Magazine of History has a terrific cover story on J. Anthony Josey, "The First Mayor of Black Milwaukee," written by Milwaukee university professors (and wife and husband) Genevieve G. McBride and Stephen Byers. Josey was a big presence in Milwaukee in the first half of the last century -- as a newspaper publisher and civic leader -- but his career started in Madison. Josey's great-nephew, former Madison alderman Ed Hill, provided many of the photos for the article, including the delightful cover shot of a smiling Josey holding a cigar. "He was a character," Hill was saying Wednesday. Hill lived with "Uncle Joe" for a time in Milwaukee in the 1950s, and was greatly influenced by him. Hill became one of Madison's first black alders when he was elected in 1970 (Gene Parks had been elected a year earlier).
August 2006
This time the news conference overlooks opponent Christy Mihos' home on Great Island across Lewis Bay from Sea Street. It is probably the closest the two of them have been to each other since he turned down her offer to be her running mate and declared his own candidacy for the office. After last evening's symposium at the Cape Cod Community College the audience offered several suggested reasons for the news conference. Since MS Healey has already said she is opposed to it, like her boss the Governor, many felt she would "stick it to Christy" by endorsing the wind farm literally in his face. One GOP stalwart believes that her running mate, Reed Hillman, has been reading her the polls statewide which show strong support for the project. Others were equally sure she would simply restate her opposition. Another GOP operative reminded this reporter that since her war chest is overflowing, she can now afford to take a stand which might lure more votes in November since she has no primary opposition and Mihos will get all the anti-wing farm votes in Barnstable County anyway.
Candidates feud overflows into Fort Pierce mayoral race
FORT PIERCE The recent tiff over a 911 call isn't the first time mayoral candidates Philip "Flip" Gates Jr. and Rick Reed have gone toe to toe. In fact, according to a police report, the two have gone "nose to nose." Police Chief Sean Baldwin said police have responded to the neighboring homes of Reed and Gates on several occasions in the past three years. Reed lives at 716 S. Second St., behind Gates' house at 711 Indian River Drive. "This seems to be an ongoing feud," Baldwin said. Reed said it all started several years ago when Gates' American bulldog attacked and killed Reed's Chow Chow, Patrick. But Gates said his dog never attacked Reed's dog, and police couldn't locate an incident report. Some of the documented incidents over the years include: In January 2006, Gates called police on Reed alleging Reed threatened Gates' wife, Sunny, with a broom and cursed at her, according to a 911 report.
