Inquiry call as mail still missing
York Crescent resident Margaret Lockwood Croft, whose son Shaun died after the boat collided with a dredger and sank, wants an investigation into the missing mail. Ms Lockwood Croft, who runs campaign organisation the Marchioness Action Group from her home, said: “They should give us an explanation of what has happened and a full apology. “Our regular postman went on holiday and during that time I didn't receive anything, not a sausage or even the usual junk mail." Neighbours began discussing their lack of post and were surprised to find that more than 100 households had been affected. Residents went to the Royal Mail headquarters in Station Road, Aldershot, to find out what had happened to their post, only to be told that it had left the depot. “I don't know if somebody's been pilfering, but it says something when you can't rely on sending a letter," Ms Lockwood Croft said.
Study: Allen Plaza would give city $175 million boost
Atlanta would see an economic benefit of $175 million annually from the W Hotel that's under construction and two other buildings scheduled to start this year at the massive Allen Plaza redevelopment downtown, a consultant's report says. The number was derived from projected payroll, business purchases, retail sales and hospitality revenues. Those three buildings would employ approximately 2,081 people, the analysis by Bleakly Advisory Group says. Bleakly was hired by Barry Real Estate Cos., the lead developer of Allen Plaza. .
The iPhone: Complete review
Yes, you can e-mail that note, and if your blog tool has an e-mail-to-blog gateway, that'll do in a pinch, but the lack of a better way to transfer text from one place to another can generally hamper interaction between different iPhone programs. iPhone calling It's easy to get lost in the hype about touchscreens and Web browsers and forget that the iPhone is, like its name says, a phone. And it works pretty well as one: When an incoming call arrives, the iPhone gently interrupts what you're doing to display Caller ID information about who's calling. You can set any of 25 built-in ringtones as your ring and assign custom ringtones to individual callers. Unfortunately, you can't use your own music or sounds as ringtones. Once a call is in progress, the iPhone's large screen gives Apple room to make it clear what your options are while on the phone, including placing people on hold and creating conference calls.
Double wins put Crist in control
It locks the current inequities in the property tax system into the Constitution," Karen Woodall, a lobbyist, human services advocate and opposition leader, said on Florida Public Radio on Tuesday night. "It's not fair, it's not equitable, and it does nothing for renters." Bill Herrle of the National Federation of Independent Business, which backed the referendum, said the election result "greatly invigorates the property tax reform movement" and ensures that the issue will remain alive in 2008. "It's a very strong vote," Herrle said. Crist again showed impeccable timing, as network TV exit polls showed that economic anxiety was the paramount concern among voters. Given the option of a modest tax cut or none at all, Crist predicted Floridians would take it, and they did.

Bank gunmen arrested and hostages freed
The robbers seized dozens of people inside the bank, at one point claiming to Colombia's Radio Caracol they held between 48 and 50 hostages. They then set free two elderly people and a pregnant woman. Then, overnight, a security guard escaped. He was shot at but was not injured. A bank employee Zoraida Castillo was released apparently so she could seek medical attention. As the crisis progressed, Guarico's state security chief Manuel Granadillo told local media that negotiators had offered several alternatives to the gunmen. One of the robbers told Radio Caracol that they would not set free the children they were holding unless they could get the getaway ambulance. "We do not want any loot at this point. The only thing we want is to save our lives,'' the man said.
